What Are the Career Options for A Law Graduate In India
The legal profession in India has undergone numerous changes over the years. Lawyers are no longer confined to the courtroom where they represent their clients. Law graduates today work in a variety of settings, including corporations, IT firms, administrative services, law firms and corporate houses.
Lawyers in India are not limited to the three branches of government: the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. With ever-changing legislation, it is more important than ever for businesses to obtain legal advice that can address new requirements in various industries. However, India still lacks sufficient lawyers and the country will require more lawyers to meet all post-pandemic requirements. than ever before. Various opportunities are open to students after graduation in law and these opportunities can also bring them well, let’s study the career options available to students after completing LLB.
BEST CAREER OPTIONS FOR LLB GRADUATES
Litigation
Litigation involves representing clients in court. Requirements are- LL.B. degree, Certificate of Practice obtained after passing the All India Bar Exam and membership in the Bar Council of the State in which you wish to practice. This procedure will make you a lawyer. As a lawyer, certain qualities give you an advantage. These include the ability to communicate with clients, as well as the talent of persuasiveness (which helps to impress the presiding judge), and last but not least, organizational and management skills (since litigation requires a lot of paperwork to be completed in a timely manner).
Law firm
A law firm is another option for entering the field of litigation. A law firm can either specialize in one area of practice or operate in various areas.
It is now common for law school undergraduates to intern with a law firm during their breaks, with the law firm eventually offering them a pre-placement (PPO) position. This is a win-win situation for all parties, as the law firm hires someone familiar with the firm’s operations and expectations, and the graduate receives the job opportunity on a silver platter. You can either do legal research, drafting and paperwork at a law firm or represent a client in court. To qualify for the latter, you must first be an attorney.
Court services
The judiciary is another legal employment option for recent graduates. This means passing the individual state’s judicial service exam and, if selected, serving as a civil judge or magistrate judge.
The exam includes questions related to current events, English, civil and criminal substantive and procedural law, property law, contract law and other topics.
Corporate sector
Every business or business organization engages in day-to-day operations that involve legal complexities. A lawyer’s advice is often valued, whether it is drafting a contract or advising on the legal ramifications of any activity.
Working in the legal department of a corporate office includes drafting contracts, negotiations, advising on mergers and acquisitions, insolvency and corporate compliance, among other things.
First, you need to look for a vacancy in the company’s legal department and then apply for it. This is usually achieved by going to their official website and emailing the application documentation to the company’s HR manager.
Clerk of Court
When it comes to deciding cases or correcting a mistake, every judge needs help. This task is performed by a clerk of court who is essentially an assistant to the judge in conducting research on the cases before the judge. The duties of a clerk of court vary from one court to another and from one judge to another. The requirements for a court clerk are as follows:
- Candidate must be a citizen of India and must not be below 18 years and above 27 years as on the last date of receipt of applications.
- Candidate must be a Law Graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (including Integrated Studies in Law) from any School/College/University/Institution established by law in India and recognized by the Bar of India for enrollment as an Advocate.
- Candidates enrolled in the fifth year of the five-year integrated law course will be able to apply if they provide proof of obtaining a legal qualification at the time of the interview/before starting work as a paralegal/research assistant.
- Candidate must be computer literate including ability to retrieve necessary information through search engines/processes such as Manupatra, SCC Online, LexisNexis, Westlaw and others.
Human rights lawyer
Human rights lawyers are at the forefront of the fight against human rights abuses around the world. They take on cases involving the inherent dignity of their clients. Vulnerable populations, marginalized groups, women, children, indigenous peoples, refugees, LGBTI communities and others have their rights protected. Working as a human rights lawyer means campaigning for those who have been victims of massive injustice. You can work for human rights courts such as the European Court of Human Rights or the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, or for non-governmental groups such as Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch as a human rights lawyer. Human rights lawyers are often employed by corporations, law firms and chambers.
Cyber Lawyer
Cyber lawyers represent individuals, businesses and governments in cybercrime disputes. An excellent cyber lawyer needs to have a thorough understanding of internet activities as well as up-to-date knowledge of cutting-edge technologies such as Bitcoin, cyber security and so on.
Must be skilled in applying relevant cyber laws to matters related to e-commerce, e-contracts and digital signatures, intellectual property rights, cyber security and other related issues. To become a cyber lawyer, a candidate needs to:
- Candidate must have completed 10+2 and pass with minimum 50% in aggregate from a recognized educational board or university.
- A valid law entrance exam result accepted by the university to which you are applying is required.
Journalism
Another career option for law graduates is media and journalism, as law school will help you develop your writing, storytelling and research skills. In the field of journalism, these skills are essential. Plus, you’ll always have an advantage when it comes to reporting legal issues.
While having a degree in journalism is usually advantageous when it comes to working as a journalist, a law graduate can also pursue a career in the media. An in-depth examination will reveal that the lawyer has all the hallmarks of a seasoned journalist. A journalist must be active, able to find mistakes, be conversational, ask questions and argue. The qualities of a lawyer seem to be similar to those of a journalist. Press Trust of India (PTI) has a policy of employing law graduates in its organization.
A lawyer can be an expert in political and crime journalism as he has a better understanding of Indian constitutional laws and the Indian Penal Code than journalists. In journalism, an LLB degree is valued as its nose for digging up RTIs and views on industry norms are clearer. By being a legal reporter for the press, he will always have the upper hand.
