Historically, it has taken 10-15 years for a new drug to go from concept to market, with costs often exceeding $2 billion due to high failure rates at each stage. However, with the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), the pharmaceutical industry is experiencing a transformative shift. AI is not only streamlining existing processes but is also enabling the discovery of new compounds, optimizing clinical trials, and personalizing treatment plans. In this article, we will explore how AI is impacting drug discovery and development across various stages, the challenges it faces, and the future potential of this technology.

1. Understanding AI in Drug Discovery

AI refers to a set of computational techniques designed to mimic aspects of human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. By leveraging big data, AI models can make more informed decisions faster than traditional methods.

There are several key areas where AI has made significant strides in drug discovery:
